Typhoon Ondoy Checklist
Two more storms are coming, I hear. I’ve stopped watching the news lately because I get teary-eyed every time I see families on rooftops waiting to be rescued or people getting carried away by waves of flood.
To be more pro-active, here are some of the things we can do in the aftermath of Typhoon Ondoy:
1. First of all, be thankful that you are reading this blog - it means you are safe and dry, you have electricity and access to the internet.
2. If you’ve waded in or come into contact with flood water, take your leptospirosis prophylaxis ASAP: (note: this is an unconfirmed medical advisory) 2 capsules doxycycline, 100mg. Single dose. Just once. Take with food and avoid taking with dairy products. DO NOT GIVE to children or pregnant women, or those who are allergic. As always, it’s best to consult your doctors when in doubt.
3. Situation map and useful links from Google can be found here.
4. For those who want to donate, volunteer or get in touch with emergency relief operations, here’s a comprehensive list of Typhoon Ondoy Emergency Hotlines and Relief Operations. You can also check out @iamsuperbianca’s blog and Ferdinand Center for The Creative for helpful resources regarding Typhoon Ondoy.
5. For announcements and typhoon advisories, here are updates from ABS-CBN News.
6. For the list of places accepting relief goods for Typhoon Ondoy victims, click here. Inquirer.net has also compiled a list of private business groups and institutions accepting donations for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy.
7. Get involved: If you can’t physically volunteer or help financially, be active in the relief efforts using your social media accounts: Twitter, Plurk, Facebook, Friendster, Tumblr, e-mail, etc. Spread word about advisories, people who need help, emergency hotlines, etc.
8. There’s a Rescue Info Hub Central for missing persons or for those who need help due to Typhoon Ondoy. GMA 7 has a Facebook drive where people can post updates, requests & concerns regarding the storm.
9. Libreng Tawag Centers for those who need to get in touch with loved ones but have no access to landlines and mobile phones - GLOBE’S: 1/ OWWA’s operations 2. Ever Gotesco Commonwealth will be up in a few hours. SMART’S: 1. Barangay Barangka Hall in Marikina 2. Ever Gotesco Mall in Pasig 3. Cainta Municipal Hall. 4. San Mateo, Rizal up soon.
10. US residents can donate to Philippine flood victims through TFC Global (contact 1-800-5272820). They can also visit www.abs-cbnfoundation.com or remit money to GMA Kapuso’s dollar accounts. Ayala Foundation via MyAyala also accepts donations through various payment channels.
11. Ways to donate to the Philippine Red Cross.
12. If you are a doctor, The Philippine Medical Association would like to extend their help through you. Physicians who would like to join the organized medical missions may contact Dr. Art Catley: 929-6366, 929-7631.
13. If you have pets who are missing or have found one, PAWS is opening its doors to dog and cat evacuees as well as accepting donations for their shelter.
14. If your car has been damaged by the flood, here’s a handy article on How to Save a Flood Damaged Car Engine.
15. To those in the government, do not use the emergency fund for anything other than an emergency and do not go panic-buying for hard liquor.
16. Be sensitive. It’s not the time to crack jokes, play pranks, spread false info at the expense of those who have suffered from Typhoon Ondoy. Be afraid of karma.
17. Report to the authorities right away when you see signs of looting.
18. Be extra careful when spreading around information that may cause unnecessary panic and in passing on account numbers for donations.
19. Pray for those who need help and for the volunteers who need all their strength to continue in the relief efforts for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy.
20. Start doing your bit in helping save our environment from global warming. Re-use those plastic bags, recycle old stuff, hug a tree.
21. Vote wisely in 2010.

On #6: I hope the president’s hijo drinks himself to near-death, and gets stranded in a chest-deep flash flood while being rushed to the hospital.

I think we should be careful when giving donations. Please check kung legit! Baka scam yan.
