The Gift of Creativity
portraits at chateau de versailles
Last year I was caught empty-handed (a little surprised even) when the last days of school for the holidays was approaching and my son’s pre-school classmates started giving gifts to each other. In a moment of motherly panic, I ended up buying a bunch of boring flash cards from Rustan’s (at more than what they seemed to be worth!) for fifteen 3-year olds.
This year, I bought my son’s gifts for his classmates ahead of the holidays. Thanks to a flash of inspiration.*
And it’s not as expensive as you might think too.
*I remember reading a section in the book A Whole New Mind by Daniel H. Pink where a bunch of 4-year olds were asked if they were artists and everyone’s hand shot up. As the researcher went to higher classes, the number of students who saw themselves as artists dropped. A four-year old is always a doodler, a sketcher, a painter!
Speaking of, here are some of my little budding artist’s goodies (that I managed to scan and save – there are so many!):

i also love giving arts and crafts to kids! i remember a friend whose 1-year-old i gave an art set to, she said that her daughter has learned to “paint” on the walls. but she’s not complaining! it’s never too early to encourage arts to kids.
Having abstract painting on the walls is the price of giving our kids “artistic freedom” haha! Yes, it’s never too early to encourage kids to hone their talents and skills. =)
Your son is so talented! That first pic is really great, esp. for a 4 year old. Notice how the flags seem to be waving (or is ti just me?). For him to be able to add that tiny detail is impressive.
Wow! Rand has mad skills! I saw the last drawing and I thought it could be used in a gocco project…like a Christmas card or something. Mother & son collaboration!
Rico > thanks! now that you pointed it out, yes it does seem like the flags are waving! my son’s teachers have been forever prodding me to enrol him in an art school and so i finally did several weeks ago. the second drawing (the bird) was his “audition” for the art school – buti na lang they accepted him hehe.
Hi Tans > yes, i was actually considering the idea! i wanted to gocco a drawing of his for his teachers (isn’t gocco the most awesome thing?). hey, let me know how the letterpress kit goes. i’m super curious!
